About UTA

The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is the public transportation agency serving the state of Utah, providing a comprehensive range of services including buses, trains, and light rail to facilitate the mobility of residents and visitors.

The Challenge

UTA’s existing online scheduling system was not only outdated but also difficult to navigate, leading to instances where users missed their rides. The system’s flaws included:

  • The need for excessive scrolling to view schedule times.
  • A table layout that required both vertical and horizontal scrolling, especially problematic for mobile users.
  • A cumbersome user interface that made it challenging to find relevant information quickly.

These issues combined to create a subpar user experience, particularly on mobile devices, which prevented users from accessing necessary information efficiently.

The Solution

Guru Technologies approached the problem by conducting comprehensive research into the scheduling systems of major transit authorities globally, from San Francisco to Spain. The goal was to create a user interface that was not only functional but also intuitive and visually appealing.

Guru Technologies utilized the jQuery library already in place, along with GSAP for animations, to implement these features. The result was a seamless user experience that kept riders informed and on schedule.

The solution included:

  • A more compact design that improved readability and usability.
Subtle use of color and shading to emphasize critical data, such as stop times.
  • Simplified controls at the top of the page, reducing the number of taps needed to navigate.
  • Introduction of “Earlier” and “Later” controls for horizontal scrolling.
  • Clickable stops and trips, enabling users to filter and narrow down data to what they care about most.

Implementation

The implementation phase involved a combination of innovative design and cutting-edge development. Guru Technologies used a “duplicate element trick” to create smooth transitions and animations. For instance, when a user wanted to filter data, a new element would appear over the old one while the main table faded out, ensuring a seamless transition. The team also employed similar techniques in reverse to restore the full schedule view when needed.

To ensure the new system was robust and user-friendly, Guru Technologies launched a beta version of the new schedule page under a secret URL. This allowed for extensive testing and feedback collection from both the client and a select group of users. The final product was rigorously tested across various browsers and devices before being deployed on UTA’s primary URL.

The Outcome

The redesigned online scheduling system was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. UTA reported a 60% reduction in customer service complaints related to the online schedule, a testament to the effectiveness of Guru Technologies’ solution. Moreover, the success of this project caught the attention of a transit system from another state, which has since reached out for a similar overhaul.

Guru Technologies’ partnership with UTA continues to evolve, with ongoing improvements and updates to ensure the system meets the needs of its riders. The project has not only improved the daily commute for thousands of UTA riders but also demonstrated Guru Technologies’ ability to deliver transformative solutions in the public transportation sector.
